PRINT: Shaping Style: Three Canadian Jewellers Elevating the Art Form

"This idea of an object holding meaning being able to carry it with you and have it hold that memory and live on your body was a really interesting concept for me."

“Canadian artist Bramble Lee Pryde created the Existential Dreadlings, a new collection from Pryde’s brand Subject Object, to honor jewelry’s role as wearable art, protective symbol, and conversation starter.”

ONLINE

“For Bramble Lee Pryde, founder of Calgary-based jewellery brand Subject Object, the math doesn’t add up. She already faces high costs to source her materials from Canada as much as possible, and to make her jewellery by hand, not to mention the rising costs of gold and silver.”

It’s a chilly afternoon in mid-February and Bramble Lee Pryde is telling me that I’m going to be okay. Well, actually, she didn’t put it quite like that. The Calgary-based artist and founder of Subject Object, a high-craft jewellery studio, is promoting her new collection, The Existential Dreadlings, by leaning on a long-running personal practice: tarot readings. This new work, a line of sculptural jewellery adorned with figures that she describes as “tiny guardians for turbulent times,” came about with the help of tarot, which Pryde uses to guide her creative process.

ONLINE

“As trade policies continue to shift, Subject Object’s decision highlights a growing tension in the fashion and accessories sector. Global reach remains desirable, but for many independent brands, it is no longer operationally neutral — even when trade agreements suggest it should be.”
