STRANGE COMPANIONS
Strange Companions: what if uncertainty does not need to be resolved?
Developed by Bramble Lee Pryde over more than four years, the project began with a group of small sculptural figures known as the Existential Dreadlings; companions created not to soothe, fix or provide answers, but to remain present alongside difficult and unresolved experiences.
What began as a series of sculptures gradually developed its own internal logic. The Dreadlings organized themselves around the four Orders. The Conditions emerged to describe the environments and circumstances surrounding experience. The Unresolved appeared where interpretation itself begins to fail.
The project now exists as an interconnected body of sculpture, painting, sound, symbolic language, an original oracle system, a field guide, installation, performance and participatory practice.
Together, these forms operate as a speculative system for observing how we make meaning when certainty is unavailable.
Strange Companions does not offer answers. It offers company.

We are surrounded by systems promising certainty at exactly the moment certainty has become increasingly difficult to locate.
We live inside an extraordinary amount of explanation.
Algorithms predict what we want. Platforms categorize what we believe. Institutions quantify risk. Wellness industries promise optimization. Political movements sell certainty. Technology increasingly offers an answer before we have finished forming the question.
And still, much of being alive remains stubbornly unresolved.
Strange Companions developed from an interest in that contradiction.
Rather than constructing another system that promises clarity, the project asks what happens when a system admits its limitations. What if an oracle refuses prediction? What if a guardian cannot rescue you? What if an object can accompany an experience without attempting to transform it into a lesson?
Across four years, these questions have become increasingly entangled with grief, environmental instability, technological acceleration, social exhaustion, misinformation, isolation, memory, transition and the strange administrative burden of continuing to be a person while all of this is happening.
The project does not propose retreat from uncertainty, nor does it romanticize it. Some uncertainty is generative. Some is frightening. Some is systemic. Some is manufactured deliberately by people who benefit from confusion.
The question: How do we live when certainty is unavailable?

THE ORDER
4 foundational values from where the system emerges.
DREADLINGS
22 observed expressions
Companions that embody particular ways of navigating and remaining with experience.
CONDITIONS
10 environmental states
Situations, pressures and circumstances that alter how an experience is understood.
UNRESOLVED
6 interruptions
Points at which meaning refuses to settle.
Together, the four classifications form the interpretive structure of Strange Companions.

As Strange Companions expanded, it developed a language of its own.
More than 300 original marks, entities, membranes, architectural forms, symbols, motifs and fragments have been drawn, painted and catalogued, alongside two typefaces developed from the artist’s hand lettering. But the language extends beyond the page.
Forms move between painting and sculpture. Symbols become structures. Archetypes determine the architecture of installation. Conditions become vessels. The Unresolved take the form of black mirrors. Sound creates atmosphere, interruption and orientation. Text, cards and participatory readings allow the system to be encountered and interpreted.
Across these forms, elements recur, mutate and accumulate meaning through use. No single medium explains Strange Companions. The language exists in the relationships between them.

Calgary, 2026
Strange Companions is currently entering its largest physical iteration to date.
New sculpture, painting, sound, publication and installation work is being produced for an October 2026 residency and exhibition at Sparrow Artspace in Calgary.
Until the residency opens, this page documents the work through fragments: material tests, studio observations, drawings, prototypes and evidence gathered during production.
The completed system will be revealed in October 2026.
